Group Riding Safety Tips
- If more than seven motorcycles on ride, break up into groups of no more than five to seven motorcycles, each group having a leader and sweep rider.
- Leader rides in left track.
- Leader and sweep rider should both be using CBs.
- Ride in staggered formation - riders alternate between left and right tracks. Odd numbered riders will be in left track and even numbered riders will be in odd track.
- When moving, stay at least one second behind rider in opposite track and two seconds behind rider in same track.
- When stopped, pull up into side-by-side formation. Resume staggered formation once moving again.
- Keep the group together - do not fall too far behind rider in front of you unless you are uncomfortable with the speed at which the group is riding.
- Check mirrors often. If rider behind falls back, slow down until trailing rider regroups.
- Stay in your track. Do not move to other track due to oncoming traffic or traffic in adjacent lane. You rob the trailing rider of rider's two second gap.
- Always use turn signals for turns and lane changes.
- Use hand signals to communicate with others in group.
- On multiple lane roads, group should only use left (passing) lane to pass or avoid merging traffic on right. Move out of left lane as soon as it is safe to do so.
- On curvy and narrow roads ride in single file with at least two second gap between riders.
- You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Use inputs from others as aid but always make your own decisions about maneuvers.
